Next Thursday marks the first anniversary of the death of the United Nations envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was killed along with 22 of his colleagues when the UN headquarters in Baghdad were bombed on Aug. 19, 2003. De Mello’s death stunned the United Nations and its staff, not least the UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, who keenly felt the loss of a friend and one of the organization’s few outstanding leaders. more
